Policy statements to list on your syllabus
Every syllabus should include the following class policies and course details outlined in the following list. For your convenience, we have created a Syllabus Checklist infographic and provided sample text for the policies in a Word document.
- Course Overview
- Learning Goals
- Instructor Contact information
- Office Hours
- Course Calendar. This needs to be explicit about writing instruction, rather than organized by the reading assignments. Review the sample syllabi for guidance.
- Course Expectations
- Short descriptions of the three formal writing assignments
- Participation/Attendance
- Grading
- Late and Missed Assignments
- The Conference Hour
- Academic Integrity and Plagiarism
- A Statement on Disability and Accessibility
- A Statement on Collegiality and Availability*
- A Statement on Technology and Asynchronous/Synchronous Work*
- Campus Writing Resources
Examples of syllabi with versions of the required policies included can be found in the Sample Syllabi section of this website.
*These statements are especially crucial in classes that run in a hybrid or online format.
College Grading Policies
The QC Academic Advising Center provides information on grading policies.
Note: In an effort to protect our adjunct faculty’s labor, the English Department requires that part-time instructors do not give INC grades without first consulting the Associate Chair.
