Library Workshops

Here is the Guide for Library Research in English 110 that was created by the QC Libraries and First Year Writing. Please include this link in your course syllabus and assign this a preparatory reading before the library research workshop for your English 110 section(s).

TBD: Information will be posted here each semester about the librarian you are paired with.

Before the Library Research Workshop

  • Reach out to your assigned librarian to say hi, schedule a class visit, and begin talking about the upcoming workshop.
  • Work with students to create preliminary version of research questions if possible. If not possible, the instructor could introduce to the class a model research question for the purposes of the workshop.
  • Send an example of a research question for a student essay to your assigned librarian. This is very helpful for librarians as they prepare to customize the library session for your class.
  • This is what librarians report as being the ideal preparation: Students use the workbook to complete the following: watched the video, received a brief tour of the QC Library website, attempted to log in, and created a research question and list of search terms.
  • Review the workbook carefully and consider how you might need to explain the differences or variations in terms that are used for library research.

During the Library Research Workshop

  • Instructors plan to chime in to make connections between information/strategies shared and the specific work of the course e.g. modeling questions that students should ask.

After the Library Research Workshop

  • Model in later classes how to contact librarians for assistance (e.g. use the Ask a Librarian chat feature on the QC Libraries website).
  • Create intentional spaces in the class and later materials (e.g. the assignment instructions themselves) for returning to and using library resources.
    • Students can be assigned to generate search terms and practice database searching for a peer’s research question.
  • Remind students that is it okay to – and maybe model? – reach out to librarians.
